Northlake Elementary Tutoring

Earlier in the school year, in the Fall to be exact, I began tutoring 2 students at Northlake Elementary through a program sponsored by the City of Garland.

This was my first year doing it, and I was excited, to say the least. Little did I know that 6 months down the road, I would be extremely sad to see my kiddos go.

We started the tutoring at the end of October and today was my last day. My two kids, as I refer to them, both 4th graders, were Carlos Gomez, in Ms. Wilson's class, and Isabel Ramirez, in Ms. Castelblanco's class.

During the time I did tutoring, we did everything from Science, Reading, Math and computers (Study Island). You would think I was there once a week on Wednesdays for 30 minutes with each student to help them out, but the one that actually learned from them was me.

Some days, I'd leave and think to myself, "goodness, I'm not so smart!" Seriously, people, some of the stuff, especially Math problems, I was like "huh?" My two kiddos though, are both extremely smart. Carlos, I know will be someone big, he is super intelligent in Math and Science (those horrible subjects that everyone seems to struggle with). His weakness and where I think he gets in trouble is that he likes to do silly things - he is definitely your typical class clown. Part of that, in my opinion, has to do with him maybe getting bored because he knows the subject matter so well.

Isabel on the other hand is extremely shy, quiet and reserved. She too is smart, but because she is so shy, she hardly ever speaks up and I think that just gives everyone the impression that she doesn't understand. She struggles a bit with her English, but I think in the past 6 months we've come a long way with her. Isabel is definitely a girly girl, which is so cool. She didn't realize today was our last day tutoring and when I told her, she was a bit surprised. The cool thing though is she handed me 3 pictures she drew for me. She had already given me 2 others before...she is quite the artist, you know. I swear she almost made me cry!

I'm going to miss my kids....

Carlos. Remember that face, this little boy will be someone big someday!

Carlos & I.

Carlos & Angel....classmates. Silly boys!

Isabel...so shy!

Isabel & I.

Frances & Isabel. They are classmates. Liz tutored Frances.

I had to sign in at the front office everytime I went to tutor and this is the badge that would print out that would allow me access into the building.

Isabel is quite the artista!

Nice and lovely kids. Great that they're learning a lot from your elementary education tutoring. It would be best for them to learn the basics very well.
