State Fair of Texas Celebrating 125 Years!!!

This year unlike other years, I did not take Sydney to the State Fair during the off days from school which usually fall on Monday & Tuesday. Instead, we decided to make the trek down to Fair Park this afternoon.

As soon as we got off of the car, I thought we would soon be getting back on it and heading back home. You see, the $1 sandals I had bought Sydney at the $.99 cent store last week, decided its dollar's worth was over right in the parking lot and her left flip flop died.

The next 30-45 minutes would prove to be trying of all three of our patience. Frank decided to put Sydney on his shoulders while we made the trek through the fair grounds in search of some replacement flip flops for Sydney. We made a pit stop to see a Ronald McDonald magic show of sorts and Sydney decided to throw a temper tantrum there that quickly got us moving back on track in search of some shoes before calling it a quick day at the fair.

We walked into one show room and had no luck there so on went Sydney on Frank's shoulders again, then we caught sight of another showroom and headed in there. We thought we had struck gold when we spotted a little stand with collegiate slippers only to discover that they were only in adult size...we continued with hopes still high and right on the left hand corner was a stand of Justin products, yes, the cowboy gear Justin boots stuff that had a $20 sale of flip flops. I quickly started trying on the different sizes to see if we would find one that fit for Sydney and luckily the medium size one ended up being the perfect cinderella fit. I handed the cashier my debit card and off we went after $22.00 with a star-studded brown Justin pair of flip flops.

Thanks to the life saver of that corner Justin brand store shop and the sweet & very happy cashier, the rest of our visit to the fair went off without a hitch. We enjoyed a corny dog, a turkey leg, some lemonade, a coke and to finish off the day and our tickets, a funnel cake.

Commitment Challenge - 30 Day WOD OFF!!!

I scheduled my appointment to meet with Mr. Selders to do my 30 day measurements and WOD since I won't be able to go tomorrow morning as scheduled.

I must admit I was very nervous about the whole thing and that is probably because I am my own worst critic. I made a huge mistake which was not bringing my journal to the class but luckily he forgave me and did not make me do burpees. This is what he designated as our WOD (for time, of course) for today.

3 Rounds for time:

200m Sprint
30 Sit Ups
15 Deadlifts (modified version using the 16kg (35lb) kettlebells)

I swear this took everything out of me but I pushed myself until I finished and well, because I did not know my time from the previous workout, I had no clue how well I did but I quickly found out.

We did this very exact workout on the first day of class exactly 1 month ago on September 14th and my time that day was 14:20.

My awesome time today ended up being 10:26!!!!!! I am so happy at the results of my workout - obviously something is being done right.

Here are the rest of my measurements. I was not to thrilled that I lost 1 lb of lean mass but I'll just have to figure that out and go from here.

These are my numbers from before (8-25-11) to after (10-14-11).

For the last couple of years I have been going to Richardson High School on the Friday before the TX-OU game to watch the Longhorn band practice for their half-time show at the game.

This year thanks to Facebook and subscribing to the Co-Op store's FB page, I found out that they would be hosting a mini pep-rally with the Longhorn Band and even Bevo.

I decided to request half a day off from work and headed out to NorthPark mall right as soon as noon came around.

The Pep Rally was a total success...there is nothing like the Longhorn Band to get a crowd in the spirit.

Painting With A Twist - Halloween

As a kind of last minute idea, I signed up to take Sydney to Painting With A Twist to see if we could master the painting for the session of Halloween which consisted of a black cat standing on pumpkins.

From pictures I have seen online, it looks like all sorts of normal people young and old can paint just about any drawing, I decided we'd give it a shot.

We showed up 30 minutes early and had a chance to check out the studio and get some pictures of some of the neat paintings they offer. While already there, I was still a bit incredulous that we could make our painting come to life all on our own.

The class promptly began at 3:00 p.m. and the adventure with it. Everything was calculated including breaks to allow the painting to dry before continuing on with the picture.

There was a brief moment right at the start of class that Syndey got a little upset because she did not understand why we had to set our first thick brush down to get the next size brush to continue the artpiece...after that, everything went off without much trouble.

I do think I have found my next favorite thing to do. Here are some pictures of our little artistic adventure.

The time on this WOD was good for the man makers, so in essence, once you completed the WOD, the important part was to see how many man makers you could do in the time remaining.

If I am not mistaken, we had a little over 2 minutes remaining when I started the man makers and I was able to complete 14!!!! WOO HOO!!!

I really enjoyed this class. :)

Reverse pole shuffle (run to the 4th light pole and back to the 1st, then run to the 3rd light pole and then back to the 1st, run to the 2nd light pole, etc...get it?)

Skill:

A1. Double unders: 3-4 X 20 (we modified this exercise and jumped rope 100 times - double unders is basically jumping twice in one loop around of the jump rope).

A2. Kipping (butterfly) movement: 3-4 X 10-15

WOD: 10!!!! (10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1) For time (15 minutes)

Thrusters: Squat with 15lb bar and end up with bar overhead
Shout through's: We modified this exercise and actually did a completely different one - we did push ups instead.

So the idea is you start by doing 10 thrusters and drop and do 10 push-ups, then get back up and do 9 thrusters and then do 9 push-ups until you get to 1.

I am convinced there will never be one day where I write on here that I am not beat - this workout YET again kicked my butt.

I know this may sound crazy but it's like I crave getting my butt beat now...it just feels so good afterwards and I'm starting to see the results in my arms..looking just a tad toned.

Let's hope now that I do good throughout the weekend until Tuesday.

This was definitely an INSANE workout...it beat the crap out of me. I have not been feeling too good health wise but I went in and gave it my best. I will more than likely need to "roll out" my soreness in lots of spots come Thursday. :)

Today's class really kicked my butt. I wasn't feeling good to begin with because my allergies have really been acting up horribly...but I still came in with a good attitude. I am not sure if it was all the upper body workout but on my second 400m run for the WOD, I was really struggling.

Hope I feel better for the next class Tuesday.

CrossFit - Day 1

We started the day (Tuesday, September 13th) with what will be our usual warm-up. Today's warm-up consisted of a 400 meter run.

We came back inside and learned a series of foam roll stretches.

Purpose: The foam roller not only stretches muscles and tendons but it also breaks down soft tissue adhesions and scar tissue. By using your own body weight and a cylindrical foam roller you can perform a self-massage or myofascial release, break up trigger points, and soothe tight fascia while increasing blood flow and circulation to the soft tissues.

Next we did a warm-up of sorts for the workout of the day which today would be shoulders.

In order to find tender spots in our upper body, we used a lacrosse ball. Once we located the tender areas we placed the lacrosse ball and rested for about 30 seconds.

To be able to stretch our arms, we used a PVC pipe and positioned our arms as far apart as possible and without bending them, we moved them forward and backward over our head.

The final two things we did were Hindu push ups & Prone scorpions.

We also did three sets (15) push press'..first with just the 15lb bar and then we added 5lb weights making it a total of 25lb. We did another 3 sets of 25lb push presses.

Lastly, we had to do a series of 60 second planks.

For the final torture of the day (KIDDING), this is what our WOD (Workout Of the Day) consisted of:

My total time to complete this was 14:20.

I am probably my worst critic and honestly I was not happy that I struggled so much to do these 3 reps of exercises. I now that the changes I want to happen will not occur overnight so I will just keep trecking along...until the next class.

Dejarte De Amar 2011 Tour - CAMILA!!!!

Ruth & I had a date to see this awesome band Sunday night (9-11-11). We got a bit disoriented getting there but I quickly found my way to the venue (you don't want to get lost in the Fair Park area).

Before CAMILA came on, it was obvious that the concert was not sold out and so we did something illegal (which I don't regret) and moved up closer about 10 rows.

CAMILA played for about an hour and a half. They played a total of 20 songs, two of which were repeated. It was really neat because I got to record 6 of the songs.

Franco De Vita En Primera Fila Tour Mira Mas Alla 2011!!!

So last week Frank mentioned to me that he had heard Franco de Vita was coming to town...the only catch in telling me this was that the locale for his presentation would be at none other than FarWest (ghetto club in Dallas). On top of this, it was his understanding at first, that tickets could only be won to the concert and not purchased.

My reason in pointing out all of these facts is that for one and very important point, I have passed up seeing a number of artist at this club because in my opinion, they kill 2-for-1 and it is ghetto...I have seen clips on tv of local rock, pop, norteno, etc., nights and there is nothing but raunchy girls and undress me with your eyes guys that go there.

Though I really, really like Franco de Vita's music, I was having issues with even contemplating the idea of going. On top of this, I basically threw the option out of the window of seeing him because I hardly ever try to win any tickets on the local radio stations.

Then as if by pure luck, I saw someone post on FB that they wanted to go see him and were probably going to purchase tickets - this idea completely turned things in a different direction.

Next thing I knew, Frank was mentioning to me that Franco de Vita was coming to town and tickets were on sale....he basically overlooked all my worries about FarWest and just told me he was almost certain that because of the artist and type of music, a completely different type of crowd than what normally attends would be there and that I had nothing to worry about.

Still thinking about whether I wanted to purchase tickets or not, Frank surprised me with purchasing a pair as a birthday gift to me....after having seen Franco de Vita in concert last night, I am SO glad that I got to see him.

With this said, I must admit that this will probably be my first and last concert at that venue - here is a brief explanation as to why. The doors didn't open until about 8:30...we arrived and sat in the parking lot at about 6:15 and proceeded to stand in line from about 6:45 to 8:30. When we were finally let in, we approached the very front of the stage so that I could get the best place in the house (for pictures, of course). Low and behold we stood there doing nothing (absolutely nothing) until about 9:30 when a local band, Alebrije, came on to perform before Franco de Vita.

Alebrije played until a little after 11:00 p.m. and we waited about 20 minutes for the stage to be cleared of their equipment and for VDV Crew to finish setting up his stuff. Then finally around 11:30...the man of the hour showed up.

The rest of the concert is history...one for the books, of course....I tell you, it was absolutely an amazing, fun, good music-filled concert. Franco de Vita knows how to put on a show and to top it off, well, his music is just great..very inspiring and very romantic.

The concert ended at 1:30 and we got home at 2:00 a.m. and straight to bed. :)

CrossFit - Introductory Foundation Class: Day 4!!!

Today wraps up the last Foundation class for CrossFit! I must say that I am a bit scared because though some of the stuff we did during these last four classes were a bit challenging (e.i. medley & wall walks), I know that come next Tuesday, Mr. Selders is going to crank up like 3 notches the intensity of the hour we are with him. I am looking forward to the classes and hopefully some great results.

Here is a brief breakdown of what we did today.

We started off with our daily warm-up routine..this time it was the 400-meter run.

We then moved inside and did a series of rowing exercises on a machine.

* 5 reps of pulling in the finished position
* 5 reps of forward & back
* 5 reps of rowing.

Next we did what is called box jumps. I attempted to do them on a 20 inch box, but only did it one time and then freaked out..finished off the routine on a 12-inch box.

The following routine we did was a little nerve wracking. It is called Wall Walks.

I came so close to finishing it off but got scared and didn't finish all the way through...I will conquer this.

Next we did a back squat with a 5-foot PVC pipe.

Last, we did a routine of plate situps with a 15-lb weight.

The model looks a tad bit too happy - though they seem fairly easy, I'm sure once I do about 15-20, I will be crying like a baby.

Before class finished, we went over our Whole9's Nutrition Guide - Mr. Selders said that starting Monday, we are to begin this..more information to come. What I already have an upper hand on is that I don't drink alcohol - seems some people might have an issue with that...I have been adherent to this nutrition plan for the last week or so, and so I hope that what is next to come will not be too difficult.

CrossFit - Introductory Foundation Class - Day 3!

Today we started class with a 400-meter run. I must admit this was much easier than doing the Medley (sshhhh, but don't tell Mr. Selders that).

We then did something Mr. Selders called a "Good Morning."

This basically entails putting a bar behind our head to about the length of the shoulders and drop back to godegrees.

Class ended up being concentrated on two (2) movements:

(1) Deadlift

(2) Hang Power Clean

We practically spent the entire class attempting to get the form for this exeercise down right - Mr. Selders is very big on getting the form correct. This is very important to avoid injury (first and foremost) and so that we can get the maximum workout.

The last thing he taught us that will hopefully deter us from being late to class and/or not bringing our tools (notepad) for the class, is called a burpee.

Mr. Selders said that throughout the workouts, we will be expected to do burpees as part of our routine, but for the most part, I gather that they will be used as "motivational consequences," as he choose to call them.

Yesterday I was blessed with being able to see another birthday. I am thankful to God first and foremost because I know that He has granted me the opportunity of another day with a purpose in mind.

Many times when our birthday is nearing, we start dreading turning a year older. Personally, I have always said, age is only a number. Though I am physically 31, I still feel like when I was a teenager. Though at times it may seem like the years are going by too fast, I try to remember that at least I am blessed to be able to be mad that they are. There are those that unexpectedly have their lives cut so fast and right when they had their whole lives planned ahead of them.

I ask God that I continue to have a positive outlook on life in the midst of so many trials and tribulations. I know that God does not give us anything that we cannot handle.

I would like to thank everyone who wished me a happy birthday, my family whom I love very much, to my dear friends, near and far, and even my co-workers who have become much like a second family. I continue to pray that God bless each and every one of you and fulfill all the desires of your heart.

Here's to another year that I know will be filled with many, many blessings.

CrossFit - Introductory Foundation Class: Day 2

I was ready to go when lunchtime rolled aroung today. Funny enough, I wasn't even comtemplating food, all I wanted to do was get rolling with my workout. It was a little harder to take down notes today since it seems like Mr. Selders is going to be trying to work some more routines in as our classes get going, but I will definitely try my best.

Here is a breakdown of what we did today:

The Medley (and no it does not involve fruit):

Jog (1-4-1)
Shuffle (1-21-1)
Jog (1-4-1)
Carioca (1-21-1)
Jog (1-4-1)
Back Pedal (1-2-1)
Jog (1-4-1)

Pigeon Stretch:

Sitting on the floor, on your knees, take one leg and bend it up like you are sitting "Indian Style". Let the opposite leg stretch back keeping the knee down. Posture is key so keep your spine aligned, your chest lifted and breath DEEP. Hold for 15-30 seconds and alternate legs.

For our DROM (Dynamic Range In Motion) today we did the following:

Standing press

Push Press

Thruster

Only difference is I used a 15lb bar (substitute that for individual weights).

Wall Ball

Throw upwards the ball to hit the edge of the target and as the ball is coming down, go into a squat position and then as you are coming up, throw the ball back towards the target. Repeat.

For this I used a 3kg ball.

We did the one the lady in the middle is doing with the feet straight out.

Also, I have read some of the Whole9's Nutrition Guide and as of right now (2:45 p.m.) I have had no carbonated drinks nor candy. So proud of msyelf.

CrossFit - Introductory Foundation Class: Day 1

Today, I officially began my new adventure towards my goal of a healthier lifestyle. I am looking forward to once and for all attain the goals I have wanted for myself for so long. Class was very interesting and required some workout on our part - I know that real quick, there will be no time to stop...as Mr. Selders put it, "There is no resting time until you are done," so I expect to put out 110% everytime I show up for class.

Here are some of the things I learned in no significant order:

CrossFit is a performance based program and not a weight loss program.

MWOD = Mobility Workout Of the Day (everyday when we show up to class, we will look to see what is on the "menu" for the day and set out and do it. Routines can range from running, to jumping rope, etc.)

DROM = Dynamic Range in Motion

Nutrition is important because it helps improve performance.

Homework for the day = Read our Foundations Program Manual For New Athletes & Whole9's Nutrition Guide (created for CrossFit Garland) - prepare questions as I read my manual and bring them to the last Introductory Foundation Class (Thursday, September 8th)

Air Squat (Performance Points)

(1) Body weight should be distributed through the heels (back 2/3 of feet)
(2) At the bottom of a squat, the creece of the hip should be below the
knee (The reason for this is because you are trying to activate more
muscle fibers and it also helps the mobility of the knee joints)
(3) At the bottom of a squat, maintain lumbar arch torso
(4) Knees are in line with toes

**Important - Always make sure to finish a squat with the hips open**

Front Squat (builds on air squat)

**Same four points**
(1) Have bar on "rack" or bar position
(2) Place the bar close to the throat or "inside the pocket."

*Tidbit* Used 15lb ball & bar for routines.

To Do List:

After each workout, make sure to place equipment back in its place.

CrossFit - Week 1!!!

I begin my Introductory Foundation classes tomorrow at noon and because I want to keep myself 100% committed to this, I figured the only way was to keep a log of my progress, and hopefully not my regress on my stats/figures.

I took my measurements this morning before I headed to work and well since I did them on my own, I can't say they are 100% accurate, but here they are anyways:

Thigs:
(R) 23 inches
(L) 23 inches

Mid Section (measured from belly button):
38 1/2 inches

Chest:
36 inches

Arms:
(R) 12 inches
(L) 12 inches.

I also weighed myself and sadly, the scale is reading between 145 & 150. I had intended to go to the City Care Clinic and go use their old fashioned stick scale, since I think that is the most accurate, but I wasn't able to stop by so I think I am going to stick with the one I have at home.

I also need to add that I took some pictures (front & side) of myself, as best I could - but for the time being will refrain from posting them. Hopefully after I am done, I will be proud of my before & after and will proudly exhibit my hard earned results. As for right now, I will spare everyone the horrid sight.

The City of Garland has rolled out a series of wellness programs designed to get employees to develop a healthier lifestyle.

One of the more newer programs is called CrossFit. According to the website, , CrossFit is a strenght and conditioning system built on constantly varied, functional movements executed at high intensity.

The city opened up the opportunity for its next class of participants and I went ahead and applied. I was told that there were a total of 36 applicants and only 19 would be selected to do this 12-week course.

On Tuesday, I received my email letting me know I have been selected. Yay for me!!!

There are three steps to the CrossFit program:

1st) Individual evaluation with CrossFit instructor

2nd) Four introductory foundation classes

3rd) CrossFit classes.

Today, I will be going for my individual evaluation after work at 5:15. I must admit I am a bit nervous but as I told the interviewers, I am ready to get in the best shape of my life so that I can increase my running goal.

With that said, since I was accepted into the program, I went through with my self-imposed challenge and signed up for the Four Seasons Half Marathon Challenge...will explain later.

For now, I will get back and post in a couple of hours how my evaluation went - hopefully he doesn't kill me. :)

I had my evaluation appointment scheduled for 5:15 which should have given me plenty of time to do my approximate 30 minute evaluation and head to Oakhill to pick up Sydney.

Unfortunately, the appointment before mine went over and I didn't start my evaluation until 5:40. Mr. Selders initially took my body measurements (chest, waist, arm & thigh), then made me stand on this machine that printed out a receipt that he said tells him my composition of body fat from lean fat and a number of other things. I also had my blood pressure taken.

He then had me do a series of squats, situps, pushups, pull-ups, and other floor exercises. I struggled with some of the floor exercises but what awaited me next was nothing compared to the "set" he was going to have me do.

Because of the time crunch I was in (it was now 6:10) and I had to get Sydney by 6:30, he gave me the "short" version of the workout set he wanted me to do. Here is what he made me do and timed me for it:

* 200 meter run
* 30 squats
* 30 sit-ups
* 20 push-ups
* 10 pull-ups.

Even though I was using a resistance band on the pull-ups, with the other stuff I had already done, I was able to do 8 and then about died. I had to catch my breath twice to finish the last two.

I don't know how, but I managed to pull myself up for the last two pull-ups. I think part of me did it because I had to rush out of there to get Sydney...by now it was 6:20 and it takes me about 15 minutes from where I was to the daycare.

I am so excited to start this new program. I plan on taking pictures and taking my own measurements to track my progress. I don't know if I will be bold enough to post pictures on here until hopefully later when I have a killer body, right!!!! Until then, I will keep a log (hopefully) on here to track my progress through this program.

My Sydney Poo is a 4th Grader!!!!

This past Monday (22nd) when I was getting Sydney dressed for school, it hit me that my little "dona pujos," Sydney poo, minnie-me, piojito, enana, and so many more names Frank and I use to refer to Sydney is no longer a baby, is almost out of the little girl stage and has started to develop some minor features of a young lady.

Sydney had been ready for the past week or so to go back to school. I think a combination of shopping for some clothes and getting her school supplies together, got her all excited. When Monday morning rolled around, she was all ready to jump into her new outfit and sport her new Dora back-pack she choose for this new year.

I took her to school with all of her supplies in tow and walked inside with her for a couple of minutes. Being that this is her 3rd year at Luna with Mrs. Padden, she wasn't too reluctant to stay...I can tell she feels at home at Luna and knows her way around.

I left 5 minutes before 8 o'clock as Mrs. Regalado informed me that this week Mrs. Padden's class would be saying the Pledge of Allegiance so they had to go up front to the office for the morning announcements.

Here is to a great 4th grade for my little princess.

Marco Antonio Solis & Ana Gabriel - Haciendo Historia (Sunday, August 21, 2011)

Frank & I went out to the Verizon Theatre on Sunday to go and watch these two awesome performers. I had seen Marco Antonio Solis two years ago almost to the date with Pepe Aguilar at the American Airlines Center and I missed him last year when he came back with Alejandro Fernandez & Joan Sebastian, so a couple of months ago when I saw he was returning and this time with Ana Gabriel I told myself I had to go. Well, the date was quickly approaching and contrary to what my plans were initially, I had still not bought my tickets. I mentioned to Frank if he wanted to go and he said yes, so I went ahead and bought the tickets, literally like the Friday before the concert.

Then Sunday rolled around. Frank had to work that day and he thought he was going to get out at 5 which would be cutting it real close to the start of the concert, by the time he got home and dressed, luckily he got out at 2:00 and was home by 2:30. Then he mentioned about the fact that since both of us were going to the concert that would mean that Sydney would be picked up around 11 or so and being that the next day was her first day of school, he did not want to have to wake her up and disturb her sleep because of the concert. He asked me to check and see if Liz or Ruth was interesting in going with me.

Of all the days that I thought I would not have a problem finding someone to go with me to this one concert, it seems like it was just the perfect wrong day. I called Liz and with her boyfriend, Edmond, recently having shoulder surgery, she had to pass. Then I called Ruth and with her new part-time job, she was not able to get released early so she passed. I told Frank that no one was able to go so he decided he would go after all.

We left the house close to 6 o'clock and I was already stressing we would not make it on time as the concert was set to start at 7:00 p.m., and the drive is about 45 minutes and on top of that there was a Cowboys game at 8:00 and the drive to the stadium is on the same route as the Verizon Theatre. Luckily, we ran into zero traffic and got there with 15 minutes to spare.

On top of that, the usher we asked for directions to our seats told us we could sit on a section closer than ours because the tickets had not been sold at that particular section. Though the seats were still on the upper level of the auditorium, we didn't pay the $100 that they were going for on Ticketmaster...kuddos for that.

As far as the concert was concerned, I think I can speak for Frank and myself and say we had an AWESOME time. Both Ana Gabriel and Marco Antonio Solis have such great songs, there is no way someone cannot have a good time.

I cannot remember the last time that Ana Gabriel was on tour and she is just one of those artists that doesn't do tours much, so I was glad that although it was at the last minute, that I did get a chance to see her perform in person. As for Marco Antonio Solis, I hope I have the opportunity to see him many more time - his music is truly good.

The Hottest Half - 10K

Last Sunday the day rolled around again to run in the race that got my running obsession started a little over a year ago.

With the record breaking temperatures we have had this summer here in North Texas, I knew to expect a very hot race. Though I thought that I would be running alone this year since Erica moved to Donna, she traveled up here for the weekend to pick up Jr., and signed up at the last minute to race as well.

I was very excited that this year, we had more of a cheer crowd bigger than any of the other 2 races I've ran in. A big thank you to Frank, Sydney, Liz, & Eva for being thereto support us.

Frank, Sydney & I went out to the American Airlines Center last Saturday (August 6th) to watch "The Greatest Show on Earth."

Sydney had been seeing the commerials on tv and everytime she would turn to me and say, "momma, I go." The last time we went she was either 4 or 5 and honestly I don't think she remembers going, so I thought what a perfect time to take her to one of the functions I had such fun memories of going to (though it was only once) as a child.

It was truly a great feeling all over seeing what a great time Sydney had at the circus. Her happiness means the world to me!!!

at an all record high and streak. Today, marks the 31st day of 100+ degree days here in North Texas.

I love me my summer temperatures but even I have to admit this is getting a little bit out of control...no joke.

I have been seeing trees that are starting to look like autumn has fallen upon them in the middle of summer, except I know that unfortunately they are not signaling the turn of a new season and cooler temperatures but are instead reflecting what this heat has done to them which is toast them to it's core. I am not much into plants and trees and all but it sure is sad to see what the scarcity of water around here is doing.

These are our temperatures for the remainder of the week.

We headed out to the beach on Sunday for a couple of hours to catch some sun. The water was very cold at first but with the sun, we quickly warmed up.

Sydney most importantly had a blast. My little kiddo is constantly saying she wants to go to the beach and though half the time she associates that with going to the pool swimming, it was wonderful to see her enjoying herself in the sand, sun and water.

July 2011 RGV Trip.

Back in November when we visited my dad in Donna for Thanksgiving, we were informed that my cousin Briceidy would be contracting nuptuals in the summer.

We planned to use this occassion for another trip to go down to the valley, visit with my dad and spend time with our relatives.

Liz, Andy, Rebecca, CJ, Sydney & I packed ourselves into Liz's truck for what would become an eventful ride down south. Two hours into our trip, after having froze nearly to the point of a popsicle (no joke) the first part of the trip, all of a sudden the air conditioner went from being super cold to feeling sort of muggy.

After several minutes of trying to mess with the air in hopes it would start working again, we gave up until our next stop at an Auto Zone where we determined (for real this time) that the remainder of the trip would be traveled under the warm sunny conditions of mother nature in Texas. Andy put in a whole can of freon only to watch it quickly drain out of the compressor.

Luckily God was on our side as we had a pretty cool ride all the way to Donna.

We arrived in Donna around 9:30 or so and finally called it a night. On Friday, we literally spent all day with my dad at his house - relaxing, which was nice.

Then Saturday came along. They day quickly flew and it was time to get dressed for Briceidy and her new hubby-to-be, Raul's wedding. The ceremony was very beautiful. Briceidy was of course radiant. As the pastor officiating the ceremony made mention - it is refreshing to see couples now a days make the formal commitment before God and friends & family to remain true to their spouse, when a lot of us for distinctive reasons, choose not to. My wish for the couple is many years filled with countless blesssing and lots of love.

The reception was just as beautiful and fun. We had a great time visiting with lots of relatives from Mexico and the valley that we had not seen in a while. I was able to capture lots of memorable pictures.

I Don't Have Time.....

A long time ago there existed this enormous apple tree. A small boy loved that tree so, and everyday he would go and play around the tree.

The little boy would climb the tree branches all the way to its highest point; he would eat his apples and would even take a nap under its shade. The little boy loved the tree and the tree loved the little boy.

As the time passed, the little boy grew up and never returned to play around the enormous tree. One day the little boy, now a young man, returned to the tree and heard the tree tell him very sad, “Have you come to play with me?”…but the young man responded, “I am no longer the little boy that used to play around enormous trees” what I want know are toys and I need money to buy them.

“I am sorry, said the tree, but I have no money...my suggestion though is that you take some of my apples and go sell them, this way you will get the money you want to buy the toys you’d like,” and the young man felt very happy. He took all the apples from the tree and got a lot of money and once again the tree was happy.

But the young man never returned after getting his money and the tree once again got very sad.

A time later, the young man returned and the tree got real happy once again and asked him, “Have you come to play with me?”… “I don’t have time to play, I must work to support my family, I need a house to live with my wife and kids, can you help me?... “I am sorry, said the tree, I don’t have a house, but…you can cut my branches and build a house.”

The young man cut the tree branches and this made the tree happy once again, but the young man never again returned…from that point on, the tree got very sad and lonely.

On a warm sunny day, the young man, now a grown man, returned to the apple tree and the tree was ecstatic. “Have you come to play with me?”… asked once again the apple tree.

The man answered: “I am sad and becoming old, I want a boat to navigate around and rest, can you give me one?”…the tree answered: “Use my trunk so that you can build your boat and that way you can navigate where you’d like and be happy.” The man cut the tree’s trunk and built his boat, then he left to go navigate for a long time.

Finally, after a long time had passed, the man returned and the tree told him, “I am very sorry, but I have nothing more to give to you, not even my apples.” The man replied, “I don’t have anymore teeth to bite; nor strength to climb your branches…for now I am simply old.”

Then the tree with tears in his eyes told him, “I honestly cannot give you anything else, the only thing that is left of me are my dead roots.” The man responded, “I don’t need much anymore, only a place where I can rest, I am so tired after many years.”

“Well, the old roots of a tree are the best place to lie down and rest, come sit with me and rest,” said the tree. The man sat beside the tree and the tree with tears in his eyes smiled at the man and was filled with happiness.

This story makes me think of each one of us, the tree is like our parents, when we are children, we love them and we play with mom and dad…when we grow up, we leave them…some of us only return to them when we need them or when we are in trouble. It doesn’t matter what the circumstance is, they are always there to lend us a hand and give us all we need to make us happy once again.

You might that the young man was cruel with the tree, but it is in this very manner that we have at times treated our parents.

Remember, if you are not a father or mother, yet, pretty soon you will be. Take advantage of the time you have them with you, and don’t wait until it’s too late and you can no longer turn back time.

We are under a heat advisory day for the 5th time in a row this week and contrary to what the meteorologist believed that it would be lifted by yesterday evening, it looks like it has been exended into the weekend.

Coming from someone like myself who loves the summer and it's very warm and sunny days, the month of July has really been extremely hot with record breaking temperatures. The only place that anyone wants to be in at the moment is the nearest pool to cool off.

I know that if I read this a couple of months from now when it's unbearably cold for me, I will wish with all my might that it was warm again, so I will not complain. Just to document, here is the forecast for the next few days.

Anthropology 2302!!!!

I finally got a response from my professor late Friday afternoon telling me that I got a 95 on my webpage. I was so relieved, I don't know what happened to the first like 20 emails I sent him but I was glad he finally got one of them.

He advised for me to check the campus website later on that day for final grades and I did and this is what I found. Happy times!!!!

I am officially done with school until August 29th when the Fall semester begins. So looking forward to the break. :)

Life is so busy.....

sometimes I just don't know how I manage to keep up with it. Here lately it seems I have had so much going on with school, work and life in general. At the current moment, I am stressing out because though I thought I had finished with a killer Summer I class (Anthropology), it seems that my last and most important assignment worth 20% of my grade was not received by my professor. I am worried that I will be docked for this and get a zero and have no chance at getting an "A" like I worked hard for all month long. I guess I will have to wait and see.

On another note, last Thursday, a week ago today, Frank & I went to go see one of our favorite groups, MANA at the American Airlines Center. The concert was fantastic. I had a really good time and enjoyed the music like no other.

Also for Frank's 30th birthday, a couple of weeks ago, I managed to pull off succesfully a surprise dinner for him. I must say all the planning and hard work paid off - he was truly surprised when he showed up at Liz's house like he normally does on Wednesday evenings expecting to spend no more than 5 minutes getting Sydney and going back home. Can you believe we didn't leave that night until 1:30? :)

I am seriously going to try and be better at this posting stuff on my blog. I find that like cleaning, it helps relax my nerves. Until soon.

Who would've thought that this day would finally come that I would see my niece Ruth become a married woman? Well, today was that day.

Erik & Ruth became a married couple through Justice of the Peace Gerry Cooper in Garland, TX at approximately 2:45 p.m.

It almost seems like yesterday when Erica & I (well, maybe more me than her) were playing cruel jokes on Ruth or when I beat her to the purchase of that clown she wanted from the neighbor's garage sale for $.25.

Though I still see her as that little kid, she is all grown up now.

Just want to say that I wish you the best. May God bless your marriage.

Last Day of Tutoring at Northlake Elementary!

Today I wrapped up my third year of tutoring at Northlake Elementary. My 4th grade student this year is named Jose Medlin.

He moved to the United States this past summer from Mexico. When I first met Jose in November, he was very shy and quiet but I could see that he was a very intelligent kid.

It blew me by surprise as well to see what manners he had. He is a very respectful young boy. Every Tuesday, I would get him from class and we would go to the library and sit there and work on his assignments from 11:00 - 11:45. Unlike other years, I only had him to tutor and not two different students.

Though it seems like only a few weeks have gone by, today wrapped up 5 monts since we first started tutoring. We never got to practice his English all that much but from his motivation and knowledge, I know that Jose will go very far.

I know he will never read this blog, but I just want to say thank you Jose for making my tutoring experience that much more fun this year. You were a lot of fun to learn with.

Insanity Fit Test!

I began doing Insanity 15 days ago. The very first day I had to do a Fit Test. This basically consists of 8 different workouts and the goal is to do as many sets of each in 1 minute.

The whole Insanity Program lasts 60 days and every 15 days you are instructed to do the Fit Test. The goal here is to hopefully see some major improvement in the amount of reps you can do as you have done Insanity more.

Here are my stats to report as of now: (03-28-11 - 04-11-11)

Not to mention, it is of course much easier to just sit down and start muching on junk food and watch t.v. instead of making the time to work out, even with a little bit of sacrifice.

I know I have the willpower to scrape away little by little at my goal.

Especially Needed Easter Egg Hunt & More Bluebonnets!

Wow!!! What another great and acomplished week I've had. I survived my second week of Insanity with tonight being especially hardest since I did two workouts with the second being abs. I am inching little by little to my goal. I realize it might take more than 60 days to get this down, but if I keep up the pace I have now, I will eventually get it.

On another note, Frank, Sydney & I went out to The Fields at Craig Ranch in McKinney for another Easter egg hunt that I had signed up Sydney for. It took us a little bit to locate the park but we finally found it.

......

The setup for this hunt was similar to the one we went to last week at Audubon, but the hunt was concentrated to one big field that was split up into sections. Here they also had live bunnies and several bounce houses with what looked to be the same Easter bunny strolling around taking pictures with the willing kids...of course, Sydney would have no part with Mr. Bunny.

The hunt was pretty successful. Afterwards we headed to Mesquite and had some dinner at The Jalapeno Tree. I had never been there before but Frank went last week when he was at the fishing tournament and ready liked it so we went to try it out.

On the way back home, we stopped at the bluebonnets, as I still wanted my very own pictures in them before they go away for the season. Frank took a couple of just me and then of course I had to get some with Sydney. Being that there is never a dull moment with that kid, she managed to knock me to the ground and back we went. It was pretty funny.

Now I am here catching up on my blog trying not to slack off like I did before. I really do enjoy keeping this up and though it may serve for nothing else, I hope that one day it will be a good way to look back at some great memories I've developed along the way.

Insanity & Fun Filled Weekend!

I am proud to say that I survived the first week of Insanity by Beach Body. As the name implies, these workout videos are insane...they are hardcore and very challenging.

Though I did not completely believe that I would be able to do this thing for a whole week after the first workout, I am so glad I was able to stick with it...I am very proud of myself.

Here is a breakdown of the workouts I did this past week:

Monday: Dig Deeper & Fit Test
Tuesday: Plyometric Cardio Circuit
Wednesday: Cardio Power & Resistance
Thursday: Cardio Recovery
Friday: Pure Cardio
Saturday: Plyometric Cardio Circuit.
Sunday: No workout...free day!!!!

This entire exercise program is scheduled for 60 days. I hope to be able to reveal to myself how tough I am by the time this is done and over with.

On another note, Sydney & I went out to the 2011 Special Needs Easter Egg Hunt at the Jerry Carter Softball complex. The days activities were scheduled from 1:00-4:00 with the easter egg hunt beginning at 2:30. We arrived and signed in and got our hot dog and drink. Sydney didn't have to do much with food, as her greatest motivation was the assortment of bounce houses that had been set up.

I finally let her go on one and was surpised at how well she did without much assistance. You see, the bounce house was set up somewhat like a obstacle course, and the very first thing she had to do was climb a tube looking thing.

The time finally arrived and we headed toward the field. You should have seen the field...it was covered in eggs. Sydney was very excited. We didn't have to use out extra bag as she was able to fit all of them in her basket. I'm lucky she gathered what she did...all she kept doing was saying, "mama, egg," acknowleding they were there and walking right past them.

Though there was quite a bit of kids, the hunt lasted a good 10 minutes. Afterwards, I got some pictures of Syndey's stash. Speaking of pictures, today was also the day I took some time to head out to the random fields of bluebonnets and capture some awesome pictures of Sydney and the bluebonnests. Considering the long day we had, Sydney did really great in being a good sport to her "momma," that is picture crazy.

Well, that is it for now. I will continue to post ocassionally random occurrences and everyonce in a while hope to put up something showing how much progress i have made.

The Tyler Azalea 10K

What a morning this has been. I just got back from Tyler from running in my second ever 10K. I am physically exhausted but oddly enough, I have a surge of energy from God knows where.

We arrived at Roseland Plantation last night around 8 p.m. and looked around a little bit. By 9:30 it was lights out as we were getting up at 5:45 to head towards Berger Park which is where the race would be at.

We didn't have such a difficult time getting the kids up and found the park pretty easily.

We got our bibs and before we knew it, it was time for the kids to do the 50 yard dash. Sydney, being the little runner she is, was loving all the attention. I do believe she had a great time. She even got a medal (which we didn't), for all her hard work.

8 o'clock quickly rolled around and it was time for Erica & I to take our places to begin our race which was exactly 6.2 miles. The weather was absolutely gorgeous...nothing compared to last year's race where it was super hot.

If you will recall from my last post, my left ankle was not doing so great as I injured it while doing Zumba yesterday morning. Liz gave me some Ibuprofen gel to put on it last night and it definitely helped a lot this morning.

I am proud to say even with a bad ankle and all, I was able to run close to 4.5 miles without stopping. The course was a little bit interesting versus the one from last year. I don't know if the race people were trying to play with us, but if I figured it out correctly, they only had mile markers for every two miles. That was a bit frusterating as I didn't even notice the first mile one and had no clue how I was doing.

Anyhow, I did make note of the 4 mile one and let me tell you right after the marker for that one we went up this hill on Roberson Lane that lasted 4 blocks (this I confirmed with the race peeps)....that hill just about did me in. It was so hard....I finally had to give in and walk a little...by then I was getting chills, seeing stars and my ankle was starting to bother me a whole lot.

When I thought it would never end, the street finally leveled out and though I did not think I was going to make it, I was able to finish in about 1:12:30 (?)....that is roughly 6 minutes better than last year's race. I was very proud of myself.

Erica did really good, too. She was just inches behind me (that is because I sped up too, because I didn't want her to beat me)..she beat last year's time by about 16 minutes....way to go Erica.

We rested for a couple of minutes and before heading back to Dallas, stopped again for a little bit to visit with Christina at Roseland. She had previously told me to make and effort to stop back and she would show us to the surprise room.

I am so glad we did. She took us to this shed looking building that has a canvass of the picture of the last supper on it. She explained to us briefly that the lady that used to own Roseland had several artists come in from Rome about 50 years ago and do a replica of that painting. She said it is painted on three different parts and it took them about 1 year to complete.

This was totally breathtaking. The picture and what it represents is just beautiful. (So glad we did stop)

After that we finally headed home and here I am doing what I promised myself I would do, and putting down my memorable event so that I will never forget this day.

It's Zumba time!

I suppose if I really wanted to I could make the effort to go into one of the local rec centers or even my gym and do the Zumba classes there, but since I don't want to make the time (the very little I already have), I decided to purchase the DVD's and try it for myself at home.

I did the basic cd yesterday afternoon at home and pretty much discovered what I already knew..I have no coordination whatsoever. It doesn't help either that I have to left feet when it comes to dancing and just even the thought of doing so makes me get all tensed up.

Either way, I tried my best and for the most part did get most of the moves down. I woke up this morning all energized and decided I would attempt Zumba again and though the instruction book says to do the basic dvd again on the second day, I decided I would jump into the next cd which is a 20 minute workout. I am sure that maybe when I get to the third cd, I will regret not doing the first cd with the moves but that is okay.

I managed to survive the 20 minute workout and actually broke a sweat and felt really refreshed afterwards, the only bad part is that I think I might have twisted my left ankle. I hope it's not too bad as I am actually headed out this afternoon to Tyler for the Tyler Azalea 10K in the morning.

The place where the race will be held at is somewhat like an arboretum...there are a ton of flowers, hence the name of the race Azalea.

Isn't this place just absolutely gorgeous?!?

Well, it is but the place we will be staying for the night so we don't have to wake up at the crack of dawn and drive to Tyler, is by far prettier. A million thanks to Christina, Jennifer and her dad for allowing us to stay the night at their breath-taking bed and breakfast.

We will be leaving shortly and I hope my next post is detailing the awesomeness of tomorrow's 10K...my 2nd in case you are keeping track.

Well, let me clarify, I was never really gone, because I do have posts ready to be uploaded from all the stuff that has been happening for the past year, but since I figured I am only going to get more behind if I never start over again, I decided I'll take my time in posting the old stuff (no one really might care about that except me anyways), and try to be better from here on out in posting the current happenings.

I might change up the way I utilize this post from what I had been doing in the past so just hold on for the ride. For the few people reading this, you all know that I write as much as I can talk and though I don't consider myself to be a comedian, I must say that some of the stuff I can write can be quite entertaining. Not to mention that my life is pretty hilarious, especially with Sydney poo around.

I recently watched the movie Julie & Julia (yes, I know that movie is from 2009) and totally loved it. Julie, a blogger, and very interesting lady, decides to take on the feat of cooking all the recipes of her favorite cook, Julia Childs, all the while blogging about it. Low and behold without expecting it, she acquires a lot of followers to her blog and they make the 365 blogging/cooking experience all the more worthwhile.

Now let me CLARIFY....I do not have any intentions of attempting to cook 200+ recipes from anyone's book much less blogging about my experiences, which might include burning a lot of things and cooking a bunch of meals with no taste and many which I would probably not eat myself anyway. All I want to do is document the everyday happenings in my little part of the world - as insignificant as they may be.

I have discovered that documenting everything is the only way to preserve things. I do that now by taking pictures, but sometimes even a picture needs a little description to go along with it to make it more memorable.

With that said, I invite you all (whomever you are) to embark in this journey into my wonderful, blessed life. I hope not to put too many breaks in between and if I do, please feel free to give me a nudge. Please feel free to nudge me as well if I begin to bore you all.

For now, I leave you with a picture of the news story I woke up to on the 5 o'clock morning news this morning. I definitely would never like to be stuck in this position, EVER, not in the cab of that truck, much less in the car that was pinned under it, which you could barely see. (Side note: glad to report that the cab driver as well as the two passengers in the car are all okay and walked away with minor scratches.)

Luna Elementary was having their Father-Daughter Valentine Dance and Frank took Sydney to her first ever, daddy-daughter dance.

They both looked super cute. Frank said that Sydney was more interested in dancing all by herself than with daddy but that she had a really good time, which is what ultimately matters.

Metal - LESS!!!!!!

Gosh, I guess it has been about 3 1/2 years now since the 2nd time around that I put on braces. In total, I have had braces on for the last 7 years of the last 10 years of my life. That is a L-O-N-G time to have metal in your mouth!

I had been told by Dr. Ray that I would come in for today's visit and he would decide then if my braces were coming off. I had high hopes it would happen and so I prepared for the big moment.

I have been blessed to have been recommended Dr. Ray's office and have been so pleased with the staff. They have made getting my braces tightened real fun, though in reality, sometimes it hurts like you can't imagine. I decided I would celebrate them as well for finally getting rid of me as their patient. :)

I brought along some balloons, pizza and cinnamon rolls to celebrate the occasion. All the while, though I kept them hidden in the truck, hoping Dr. Ray would free me of my metal today.

I didn't have to wait long, I think it helped that he saw my anxiousness to hear the words come out of his mouth. When he told me they were coming off, I was beyond myself. I had to ask them to give me a moment while I returned from my truck.

Of course they were kind of shocked, more so when they saw me walking in with the pizza and stuff. It was definitely the highlight of my day!

Who knew I had a pretty smile underneath all that metal!

Christmas Eve 2009!

This year has been extra special as it seems like my dad has been here more than any other year. I try to be understanding most of the time that he is more comfortable being in his home back in Donna doing his thing, but it's always nice to have him around us.

This Christmas was extra special as he stuck around to celebrate it with us. We got together at Albert's house. It was very cold Christmas Eve and we actually had a "white Christmas" this year. It began snowing around 5 in the afternoon and it was just beautiful.

Grover's Retirement....That Dog Don't Hunt Here!

Rewind the clock back to July 2003. We had been in Garland for a total of 7 months and I had been working for the City of Garland at the Landfill for the same amount of time.

I had recently applied for a Customer Service position with New Accounts in Customer Service and had received a call from who would become my new boss, Grover Moore. I enthusiastically accepted the job offer and was ready to start at my new job. I would stay with New Accounts for six months and move on to the Credit Department, still within the Customer Service division, leaving behind one of my all time favorite supervisors..

Not long after being there, Grover Moore was moved to Credit and became the supervisor of Credit. I couldn't be more excited. It was always nice to know that when you do your job as you are told and a citizen requests to speak with your supervisor, they pretty much back you up in what you are doing.

I left the Credit Department in May 2006 to come to my current job in Safelight but even before I left, I would always ask Grover when he was going to retire and his response was always "soon," but it seemed like it never came around.

Finally one morning I got an email from a co-worker letting me know that Grover was going to retire. I was so happy, not because he was leaving the city, but because he had put in his time and deserved to be work-free and go home to his beloved ranch in Sherman.

Here are a few pictures of his retirement celebration. Mr. Moore will always be one of my favorite bosses. "Good luck to you sir."

I went out to volunteer at this year's Turkey Trot at Sydney's school. It was so cold, I didn't know if I would survive the frigid temperatures while manning my post. Sydney's class got to do the "trot" around 8:30. I was anxiously awaiting to see my little munchkin come around the corner. When she realized I was standing there, she got all excited. It made me very happy. I am glad that I can be with her for the little moments that are special in her life.

This was her second time going around the course and as you can tell by now she was a little wired up being a tad silly.

Time to head back inside. 'Til next year turkey trotters!

Tom Thumb Texas Stampede Championship Rodeo Presents Pat Green!

I went out to the American Airlines Center to watch one of my all time favorite artist, Pat Green.

His concert was part of a yearly 3-day rodeo weekend put on by Tom Thumb. I got there early enough to get to watch some of the rodeo.

That finally ended and on to the part for which I came, the concert. As always, Pat Green was awesome. Unfortunately I didn't do my checklist this time around which never happens and didn't have my camera fully charged so I wasn't able to take my hundreds of pictures.

Trick o Treat.....Halloween 2009!

We decided to take the kids out trick o treating to a neighborhood close to the house. It is really nice and the houses almost look like mansions so we figured they'd be giving out great candy.

The bad economy apparently has even hit the owner's of these houses as not very many were out greeting trick o treaters but the ones that did participate where fun - the kids definitely had a good time. Here are some of the pictures I took of our fun-filled night.

Sachse Haunted House!

We were in the mood to go to a haunted house but didn't want to spend too much money on the big name ones that are around the Metroplex. Erica found one in Sachse that is put on by a family straight out of their house.

She spotted the sign near the neighborhood in Sachse and it said they took donations. We decided to go looking for it and see what it was all about. When we found it, we were surprised that it was a house right smack in the middle of the neighborhood. We were also stunned at how neat the homeowners had decorated it.

From the looks of all the people lined up, we figured it might really be worth it. There was no entry fee to go into the haunted house, all the homeowners were requesting was a donation. We decided our donation would be $1 per person.

The list of haunted house goers was as follows: Sydney & I, Erica, Dathan, Tyler, & Hector, Liz & Rebecca, la Sra. Adriana, el Sr. Gustavo, Andrea and Adrian.

Now, I do have to mention that some people knew before hand that they were NOT going into the haunted house due to heart conditions - kidding - no, but seriously they are just now into the whole spook stuff. Liz was the person and she decided she would keep Sydney while I went in.

The first group to go in was Rebecca, Tyler, Erica & Hector. Right after that Dathan & I went in and then la Sra. Adriana and el Sr. Gustavo.

Well, Dathan & I were already inside to realize what was happening outside but apparently not long after the first group went in, Rebecca, Erica and Tyler came running back out scared out of their "pantalones!!!"

Dathan, I and the rest of the group did go through the entire house. I must admit it was kind of scary...it was very dark and people that didn't look real would move or suddenly pop out of nowhere.

For a small donation, I must say it was pretty fun.

The Mile High City - Mini Vacation! October 24, 2009 - October 28, 2009

Turn back the clock a couple of months to this summer when I was going from one concert to the next. Because I was dropping my hard earned pennies at Ticketmaster going to see some great shows, I all of a sudden got placed on a sort of VIP list that sends me emails about upcoming shows and allows me to purchase tickets before they go on sale to the general public.

I was sitting at work when I saw my weekly Ticketmaster deals of the week and upcoming shows email show up in my inbox. To my surprise, one of Brea's favorite guys and band, Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20 was the "new arrival" of the week. He was scheduled to perform at the American Airlines Center on Monday, October 5th.

I immediately got on Facebook and put a posts informing Brea that he would be in Dallas during one of his tour stops. The response I received would eventually get me to see Brea after almost 3 years and go to Denver and on top of that see Rob Thomas in concert.

Brea responded back that if I made my way up to Denver, she would get us to the concert. I could not believe it, but being that the concert was months away, I kind of put it on the back burner and forgot all about the offer.

October quickly rolled around and it was time to start finalizing my plans if I wanted to make the trip up there. I won't go into much detail, but everything pretty much fell right into place. I was able to get round-trip tickets (FREE) to Denver and had enough time to take off from work. The plans became finalized and I was set to leave Dallas on Saturday morning, October 24th and return on Wednesday, October 28th.

My departure day finally got here and I honestly did not believe I was actually going. It wasn't until I was waiting to board that it hit me - I was going to Denver, a whole new place for me, to visit with my good college friend, Brea, and enjoy some time off.

My flight was scheduled to depart Dallas Love Field at 8:45 and arrive in Oklahoma City at 11:15 and then arrive in Denver at 12:30. Of course nothing can go without incident when it comes to me. I left Dallas and arrived in Oklahoma City just fine, only to discover moments before the plane landed that I did not have my pass to get on the other plane that would take me to Denver. I was honestly panicking and as soon as I got off the plane, I headed towards the ticket counter and explained to the gentleman that back in Dallas they had kept both of my boarding passes. He was really cool about it (considering he was a Sooner and I was in Sooner country) and printed me out another boarding pass and stressed not to let the Denver folks do the same on my return flight.

As if nothing else could go wrong since I had managed to calm my nerves, I start seeing what looks to be mechanics go towards the plane we were supposed to be getting on to go to Denver. Not long after that on the intercom comes a voice saying that due to some "mechanical problems," our plane is being serviced and that there is another one en route from Houston to pick us up. I was like great..the wait would be about another hour or so. Honestly though, I much rather would wait on that terminal than get on an airplane that something might go wrong on just because we were being antsy.

Our new plane finally arrived and we were all able to board and off to Denver we were. The flight was only about an hour and a half. I was in shock of the size of the Denver airport but do take into consideration that I don't fly much, so to someone else, that might seem like a tiny airport. I had previously notified Brea of my flight delay so she knew I was getting in later. It wasn't long after I landed that she was there to get me.

Before we headed to her house we stopped by the Olive Garden so I could get something to eat that could help settle my tummy from the bumpy landing. After that we headed to her place to relax for a little bit before we went out to Governor's Park downtown & meet her parents to watch the UT vs Missouri game.

We headed downtown where Brea and her parents along with a whole lot of other Colorado UT fans gather to watch the games weekly. The game was not a disappointment except that because the game was practically becoming a blowout the local tv station switched games on us (that was kind of the sucky part), but still I had a really good time.

We headed home and called it a night. The plans for Sunday definitely would require some rest, if I could get some, as I was so excited about them.

We woke up early Sunday morning because the weather predicted a lot of snow by the afternoon. Brea had planned to take me up to the mountains to see some snow and hopefully get a good view of the beautiful Colorado Mountains. We headed out and the drive down West I-70 was just spectacular. At first we thought it might turn out to be a bad day because there was a lot of haze but as we continued driving we made one slight turn and all the haze disappeared and there was nothing but clear blue skies and the best view of mountains like I had never seen before.

We started heading up and I was seriously beyond excitement. We must've driven about 15 minutes or so up the mountain looking for a specific trail that Brea had wanted to go on but never found it. We ended up stopping off to one side anyway to get some pictures. It was a crisp 22 degrees but it did not feel that cold at all. After snapping a few pics, we decided to get back home.

On the way back home, Brea made an exit to show me "Red Rocks Amphitheatre." This place basically serves as an open amphitheatre to host mainly concerts. The name is obviously derived from the surrounding rocks that cover this place that are a naturally red in color. You know, when I was in the mountains I thought that was cool, well, driving up to this place was just beyond cool. It was snowing pretty hard by now and so everything just looked a bit surreal.

We hung out there for a while and visited the visitor's center and then decided to head home. We went to go watch Amelia later on, as the weather was just not cooperating to do much else. For someone like me who rarely goes to the movies, it was a nice little escape...I also wanted to see that movie which didn't let down...it was pretty good.

Before we headed home, Brea took me to Sloan's Lake Park. She said that since I was snapping pictures of everything, she'd take me to the place that in her opinion, has the best view of the city skyline. Let me tell you, she was absolutely right.

After we got home, we ordered some Chinese and that was it for Sunday. :)

Monday rolled around and though I had offered Brea to let me do some winter cleaning, she refused and said that all she wanted was for me to enjoy my time away from home and chores and responsibilities. She basically wanted me to relax and taking it easy. I'm pretty antsy and can't stay still for very long so I must admit this was a bit hard. I decided halfway through the day I'd go for a walk a couple of blocks down the road to the local Walgreens and see if I could find something to munch on. I came back and before I knew it, 5 o'clock rolled around and Brea was home.

Brea decided we would hit downtown for the night view of it (and no, I don't mean the clubbing scene - it was Monday night!). We went to go eat at the Cheesecake Factory and had a yummy dinner - Brea enjoyed a slice of velvet cheesecake. Afterwards we hoped on the train that takes you basically all around downtown. We made a stop at the Convention Center that has the biggest blue bear I've ever seen in my entire life. It was really neat to see that thing up close - Brea had told me about this fascinating bear, but I didn't appreciate just how cool it was until we got close up.

We then went to the Hyatt Regency and up to the 27th floor to Peak's Lounge. This very hip bar had the best view of the city...everything was all lit up, just beautiful. We got a little carried away and lost track of time chatting away. We finally left and as we got back to her car, we noticed we got a parking ticket - crappola. Brea took it pretty calm though, and said she'd just make her $25 contribution to the City of Denver.

We headed home, watched a little tv and then called it a night. One more night and we would be headed to see Rob Thomas.

Tuesday rolled around and I couldn't believe that my time in Denver was down to the last day. I spent the day at Brea's actually doing some work from emails I got. Brea got out of work a little early and we headed to dinner to Jack-n-Grill. I had some enchiladas and tasted the famous "green chile" that I kept confusing for green chili. Brea thought I was so weird being Hispanic and all that I insisted I'd never had green chile....little did I know she was referring to hot sauce.

We left with a little over an hour for the concert to begin. It was pretty cold that afternoon and we feared the worst, as the weather guru's were predicting the worse snow to hit Denver this early in the season. I thought to myself I couldn't possibly see anymore snow that what I had seen at Red Rocks and that to me Texas girl was a lot, well, I will say I was wrong.

As we drove closer to the concert, the snow was starting to come down pretty bad. We finally got indoors to the warmth and settled into our seats to watch the opening band One Republic. They put on quite a show....loved it.

Then Rob Thomas finally came on. Man, all I can say is what a show. He really knows how to entertain a crowd. It was all spectacular.

It was finally time to head back to Brea's. We walked out and sure enough, the snow was all over the place and was still coming down, harder than when we walked in. We made it to the car and safely home. It was time to get to bed and try to sleep for a couple of hours because we both had to get up really early, like 4am early, and head to the airport. It just so happened that on the same day I was returning to Dallas, Brea was flying into Irving for training.

We woke up bright and early fearing the worst and luckily the roads were not too bad. I had to say goodbye to Brea as she was going on another flight and headed to my gate. The wait, since we were early, seemed eternal, but that was just the beginning. All the while I waited, the snow just kept coming down. By the time it was time to board my plane, I had already seen other airplanes being de-iced. I don't fly often, well, hardly ever, so this was all new to me and mind you, very, very scary. We got to board the plane eventually, but ended up sitting on the tarmac for about an hour while our plane got de-iced just like the others.

Finally it was time for take off. Though I was ready to get home, it sure was a bit sad to say goodbye to Denver - it was so much fun! Hope to come back soon!

As you can see, it was snowing pretty hard. I have never seen the size of snowflakes that I saw here.

At the bottom down there is the Amphiteatre. Many great artist have performed here and put on great shows. Maybe someday I can come back and enjoy a great show!! BTW, the little people down there were doing yoga...now this I thought was crazy....yoga in the middle of a snowstorm?!?

When we got out of the concert we realized that apparently it had snowed the entire time as there was a full sheet of snow and still coming down on the floor and everywhere.

We woke up on Wednesday morning not really knowing if we would be able to depart on our flight because the weather conditions seemed to be deteriorating by the minute, but we still headed towards the airport. Once we arrived, we realized the severity of the matter...I don't fly very much but apparently there is a thing called de-icing when the planes get ice or snow on them. The word was enough to put my nerves on end.

Iceman 7 took care of our plane. We sat on the tarmac for about an hour before we were cleared for take-off. It was definitely an experience to remember.

I made it home safely about an hour and a half later than originally planned but the most important thing is that I made it.

I cannot thank Brea enough for making me feel so at home and for allowing me to chill while at her place. Denver is by far one of the prettiest cities I have ever been too and would recommend it to everyone.

Texas State Fair 2009!

Every year the kids get a day off from school and get a free pass to go to the State Fair of Texas.

Last year I took the day off but because it was raining and a little cold, we had to forego the fair and ended up in an arcade in Mesquite instead. I was hoping that luck would be on our side this year and allow us to go and have a good day at the fair.

Apparently I made someone really happy as I got my wish. Like it is my custom, I can and will do things by myself but I always like to invite people to come along for the fun, if they so wish. The victims this time around were Erica, Dathan, Tyler, Rebecca, la Sra. Adriana, el Sr. Gustavo, Adrian, Andrea, Sydney poo, myself and Jazmin.

We decided to take the DART since this year they opened up a "Green Line" that will drop you off right in front of the entrance to the fair. We figured with the drive and parking, it would be just about the same. The whole ride took about an hour and a half. We got to the fair around 12:30.

By then, all the food vendors were already up and going and well so were our tummies! We all agreed that we'd make our tummies happy and get some of the great fair food (everything FRIED)! I as usual, wanted to have a Fletcher's corn dog with a cold drink and as a dessert, a funnel cake...yummy.

We all finished eating and had our snacks from nachos, to caramel apples, to funnel cakes and goodness knows what all else and then decided to start the trek towards the rides.

The kids got on a number of rides, so many I lost count. They all seeme to be having a great time the entire time we were there, which just this alone, made my day and made me feel like my mission was completed - that everyone had a good time.

The weather I must add was also gorgeous! It was sunny and just perfect...not too cold, not too hot and only sprinkled for like 2 minutes late in the afternoon.

We finally decided to call it a day around 5 o'clock and headed back towards what we thought was the waiting area to get back on DART. Well, leave it to us to get all lost and end up walking out of Fair Park and headed towards ghettoville (MLK Blvd).

We quickly figured out that we were headed in the wrong direction and headed back towards the fair grounds and luckily spotted and officer. I kindly asked her for directions and she was so cool to vouch for us to the people checking your tickets to the fair and tell them we had just left and some of us (the kids, mostly) did not have our tickets and that all we wanted was to go around the park and go out the main entrance so we could catch the DART back home.

We finally found our way back out and waited for a little bit for the train. The ride home was a pretty quiet one, I think by now everyone was a little worn out and just ready to get home and relax.

It was definitely a day to remember! I know I'll be doing this again next year!

The Texas Star is the biggest ferris wheel in the US, if not in the whole world. This is the second time that Sydney and I ride it.

This is the little basket you ride the ferris wheel in....some people might not like it too much...very small and it rocks a lot.

When Sydney was in PPCD at Weaver, we came out to the fair every year and this was a must do stop. Little Hands on the Farm is basically a mini-fake farm. The kids collect different items throughout the farm and then at the end they get to "sell" them back for some snacks and a drink. It was quite a hit with all the kids, big & small, alike.

The Wizard of Oz

Being that I read, listen to and watch the news practically 24 hours a day, I got to find out about something that I thought was super cool.

You see this year is the 70th Anniversary of the making of "The Wizard of Oz." The original movie debuted in movie theatres in 1939 and to mark the anniversary this year, the film is becoming available on Blu-ray.

Every so often, in honor of these milestones, select theatres will show these classics in theatres for the people to enjoy them in that setting. They decided to do this for this movie. When I heard about it, at first I was a bit hesitant because I immediately thought about taking Sydney but wasn't quite sure how she would react to being in the theatre and if she would even want to stay still.

I took my chances and hoped she'd enjoy watching it on a huge screen like she had months before when one Sunday evening TBS played it back to back and she sat through both showings without putting up too much fuss.

We headed out to the movies in Mesquite (AMC 30) and bought our tickets. To my surprise and happiness, Sydney was very intrigued during the whole movie, reacting at times to some of the scarier scenes, like when the evil witch is coming down the road to take Toto, or when the munchkins start flying to get Dorothy.

I was so glad I took the chance and took her to see it. When she gets older, I'll be sure to tell her that she went and saw that movie at the theatre.

We're Going To The Chapel, We're Going To Get Married!

Today was my brother Albert's and his girlfriend, Laura's wedding. I took an extended lunch and left the office around 10:30 with Liz and headed towards Frisco to the JP Court where they would get married.

The ceremony was really nice....very short, the shortest marriage ceremony I've seen, but still very nice. The whole thing must have lasted 20 minutes...15 of those were spent taking pictures (get my point).

Afterwards, Albert & Laura invited us to lunch at Papasito's...it was very yummy.

Brad Paisely American Saturday Night Tour!

Went out with Frank to Super Pages to see the one and only Brad Paisely. I had requested to have my tickets picked up at "Will Call," as I wanted the actual ticket and not a paper copy from Ticketmaster that is frankly really boring.

We arrived and to our great surprise did not have to pay for the $30 parking that had been advertised. We headed directly towards the ticket booth all the while making an observation of something really odd.

It seemed that we were the only Hispanics in the mist of a sea of white people. I know that maybe not a whole heck of a lot of Hispanics like country music, but I had no clue it was to this extreme. It was really, really weird to look around all these people and not see another Hispanic around.

We finally made our way into the concert area and found our seats, which thankfully were located towards the back but still under the covered area. You see, Superpages has a lawn section for which you paid like $15. On any other given day, that would have been just fine, but tonight is had been sprinkling all day long and did so all throughout the concert. People were completely drenched by the time it was all over.

There were two opening acts: Jimmie Wayne and Dierks Bentley. Both were really good but I was just ready to see Brad Paisley. He finally came on stage and put on a great show, just like the previous two I had seen back in Austin when he was just getting started.

I do have to say though, that I was a bit disappointed he did not play more of his old songs, but it was a great concert nonetheless.

Angie's 15th Birthday Bash!

If you would have asked me years ago would I believe we'd be celebrating Angie's
15th birthday now, I would have laughed and told you, "Oh, that's years away!!!!"

Well imagine then how Albert and Araceli, Angie's parents, must feel saying they are the parents of a 15-year old beautiful teenager!

If you know Angie, you know that she is quieter than a mouse....and I ain't kidding about that. That girl will not talk to anyone in her family, much less a stranger. It is very difficult to get her to open up but hey, that is what defines Angie, what make her unique and you learn to accept it - no harm is meant on her part.

With that said, she apparently had already expressed to her parents that they could save themselves lots of money and not give her the traditional quinceanera that we usually have for when girls turn 15!

With a day into a new house, Albert and Laura, somehow tidied up their new place and with the help of Araceli and her family who provided a great pork "guisado," put on the BEST last minute fiesta to celebrate Angie's birthday.

I really have to bow down and give it to them for doing this with such little time. Even with all her shyness and lack of expression, I'm sure Angie really appreciated all that was done for her.

Longhorns Blowout Against Lousiana-Monroe (59-20)

"It took exactly two plays to get the Longhorns rolling into another business-as-usual opening-day blowout.

A Texas defense that has spent the entire off-season talking about creating turnovers finally got to sink its teeth into an opposing team, recovering their first fumble on Louisiana-Monroe’s second play from scrimmage. Defensive end Sam Acho out-wrestled quarterback Trey Revell for the football after a misplayed shotgun snap, giving Colt McCoy and the Texas offense possession at the ULM 23.

The 101,096 fans that packed Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday night could have guessed what came next. In just three plays, McCoy led the offense to the goal line, where, to chants of “Cody” from the stands, Texas’ goal line specialist Cody Johnson bulldozed through the defense for his first of three one-yard touchdown runs en route to a 59-20 Texas victory.

“It was really big,” said Acho of the early turnover. “It was good for our team to get the offense on the field quickly and score early.”

Johnson’s touchdown was just the start the Longhorns needed to quell any thoughts of an upset. They rode the early momentum to a 14-3 lead at the end of the first quarter following another Johnson touchdown run on Texas’ next possession. Despite a letup in the second quarter, the Longhorns ran out to a 38-10 halftime lead.

The defense wasn’t perfect, however. With ULM down 21-3 and reeling, the Longhorns briefly let the Warhawks back in the game with one big busted play. Cornerback Chykie Brown was caught with his eyes in the backfield as quarterback Trey Revell scrambled to his right and unleashed a bomb down the field, finding the streaking Luther Ambrose for a 75-yard touchdown.

The game didn’t stay competitive for too long. On the ensuing kickoff, redshirt freshman D.J. Monroe introduced himself to the Texas crowd by taking his first touch of his football career for an electrifying 89-yard return touchdown.

“It was a great feeling, it couldn’t have been any better,” said Monroe, who has undergone several position changes during his brief time at Texas. “I’ve been waiting my turn, but I had my whole team behind me.”

Monroe followed that opening act with a slew of good runs, finishing with 64 rushing yards on just nine carries. The track star-turned-running back provided the spark to lift the Longhorns out of their midgame malaise and put ULM away early.

Despite throwing an interception and getting sacked twice, McCoy had another solid, if unspectacular, day leading the offense. He finished with 317 yards and was 21 of 29 passing with two touchdown passes, including a 78-yard bomb to Jordan Shipley to help the Horns pull away before halftime. Shipley did most of his damage early as he piled up a career-high 180 yards on eight catches.

McCoy made amends for what he considered a subpar first half with a quick score on the other side of halftime, finding former backup quarterback John Chiles for a 14-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 45-10.

This success was all that was expected of the Texas offense, which finished with 568 total yards and even had time for a touchdown drive from true freshman quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who scampered in for a 13-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

It wasn’t all smiles on the Texas sideline, though, as the offense turned the ball over three times — including two fumbles by starting running back Vondrell McGee — and had an abundance of penalties. But fumbles aside, the running game racked up the yardage and the carries, taking the ball 49 times and gaining 205 yards.

“One of the things we have to be careful with is the standards are set so high, you feel like you can’t make any mistakes,” said head coach Mack Brown. “This is the worst we’ll be. Opening games are very difficult.”

The new-look defense, meanwhile, held its own, building on Acho’s early fumble recovery and forcing three turnovers, with Acho recovering a second fumble later in the game and holding strong on several ULM red-zone trips.

Despite ULM having three possessions that started on the Texas half of the field after two turnovers and a good punt return, the defense held the Warhawks to only three points, forcing a punt and a turnover at the hands of backup safety Nolan Brewster, who intercepted Revell at the 3-yard line.

“You don’t want to give up 20 points, ever,” said defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

“You don’t want to give up a 75-yard touchdown pass. Obviously, we have an awful lot of work… I think if you take away a few plays in the first half, we played a pretty good ball game.” "

Having a second job can really have it's perks you know. Well, I say this only if you have one and enjoy it for one and also if you get to work with a good group of people, which I am blessed to say that I do.

With that said, when it comes to celebrating your birthday, if you are happy that you are getting older, having 2 jobs only makes it that much better because you get "celebrated" twice.

Though I have just returned to Plano after being MIA a couple of months, I came back just in time to celebrate my birthday and no, this was not done on purpose either. :)

My co-workers had a beautiful card for me with the cutest balloons and a Ty Beanie bear (blue) and the most delicious cake I've had in a while.

It's really a blessing when even after working a long day, you have to show up to another job and work for several more hours but get to do it with a good group of people.
